This is a detached building designed specifically for the teaching of Food Technology. We worked closely with the teaching staff to develop the brief in some detail and this brief was then used to inform the design decisions on both a broad scale and down to very particular details.

Our brief was to design a single space which could accommodate both the practical and theoretical aspects of the curriculum. The teacher tends to divide the students into smaller groups in order to have various activities going on at the same time. The main space is therefore divided into zones demarcated by different ceiling heights. The two main areas are divided by a light well which runs the length of the building. The clearstory windows in the light well provide very good levels of natural light and also encourage natural ventilation, which in turn helps reduce the load on the mechanical ventilation system. The layout of the room is such that the teacher can oversee all groups of students at the same time and maintain control.

The Food Technology Building was officially opened by Rob Rees, the Cotswold Chef, and it has been a great success for the school. A small vegetable garden has since been created to the rear of the building where home grown produce is harvested as part of the curriculum.
